little white lies film review pic

this is a film review of the movie Neds in the magazine little white lies. there is a photo at the top of the page of a clip taken from the movie, which will act as a preview for the readers. the image shows a young boy looking scared face to face with a hooded figure who is standing over him, making the young boy look vulnerable and the hooded figure look powerful. the fact that we can't see the face of the person in the coat will make the audience want to go see the film to find out who it is, and why the young boy looks so terrified. for my film review, I will also use an engaging image from my film to catch the attention of the reader. the layout of the page is three columns which is a common convention of a review. underneath the image there's information about the film such as the director, who is starring in the film and when it will be released. I think this is a good idea because it is easy for the audience to see and read it.

Editing Practise

I chose the song 'sax' by Fleur East and used iMovie to create a short piece of clips edited together to fit the song. I used a website called save media to transfer YouTube clips onto iMovie. This task has improved my editing skills on iMovie and will allow me to progress further when editing my own short film.

Short Film Pitch

The aging population are the most serious issue facing the NHS today… and that includes an increase of suffers of Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Remembering Jean is a heart-tending exploration of these issues on a very personal level based on the experiences of the writer and director. It is primarily targeted at audiences for short films who attend independent cinemas aged 18-35 but the subject matter can appeal to and affect anybody. I think it would be shown in the Tyneside independent cinema and also online on the film’s website as this is a popular way of distributing and exhibiting short films. There’s also a possibility that it will be shown in schools for educational purposes. The unique selling point of remembering jean is a drama documentary inspired by true events and the tag line is ‘memory is all we are’.

Film Poster Analysis 2 - Away From Her

Film Poster Analysis 1 - Still Alice

  • The main character is in the centre of the page which is a common convention of posters, however she is not looking directly at the camera. This portrays the idea that she is lost and confused and the emptiness in her facial expression helps support this idea.
  • The poster itself is quite plain as there are no vibrant colours or lots of text. This could reflect on the idea that her mind is plain and blank because of the disease she has been diagnosed with.
  • The text is very simple and basic along with the colour pallet as there are only two colours. This is to emphasise the way the mind works in an Alzheimer's sufferer.

filming and editing practice clip 2

We used more transitions in this clip to try and create the effect of a TV news report. We used a news sound effect from iMovie during the opening sequence, and then repeated the same tune throughout the clip but reduced the volume so it was playing in the background but you could hear the dialogue over the top.

fade to white and sudden change of music, also from iMovie sound effects.

filming and editing practice

Me and my classmates (Matthew, Ellenor, Chloe and Jade) have worked together and managed to edit together two short clips on iMovie.

We were experimenting with different shots e.g tracking and panning shots, POV, high/low angles, shot reverse shot etc.

We all took turns experimenting with the video camera to try out different types of shots.

We used iMovie to edit some clips together.

We cut parts out of different clips and added them together to create our short extract. We messed around with different effects such as the colour, sound effects and transitions.

Asking for permission

I have contacted the film producers and composer of the song that I would like to include in my short film.

Introduction to A2 Media Studies

The coursework aspect of A2 must contain a media portfolio, comprising a main and ancillary texts as well as a presentation of research, planning and evaluation, all of which I will be publishing on this blog. After reading and discussing the 12 options of coursework briefs, I have chosen to work on my own to produce the following:

My film will be based on Alzheimer's.

front cover completed

this is my final edit of the front cover for my magazine. I wanted to add another colour in order to follow the typical conventions of a magazine which is using 3 colours. I selected the blue from the background of the magazine and used that in the text on the bottom right. I also asked my target audience for some feedback and I adjusted to their comments as they pointed out that due to the increase of brightness, some of the white text was difficult to read. To solve this I increased the distance of the drop shadow to make it clearer and easier to read. finally, I changed the text below "Toni Parlett" to "takes on the world" replacing "world exclusive" because it grasps the idea of her touring the world again.

contents page completed

I added subheadings underneath the titles because I asked my target audience what they thought and they said they would prefer a little bit of information underneath each title to make it even clearer. I really liked this idea as it looks much better and I am following common conventions from my style model magazines such as Q and NME. I changed the strap line text from red to blue as it fits my house style since I have used the blue in my front cover.  I also added a drop shadow onto the white text on the left side of the page.

Double page article completed

This is my final edit of my double page article. I have removed the quotation that was in the top right hand corner as I thought it looked out of place which may have caused it to lack in professionalism. I replaced it with an image of my model at the time in which the article describes (when she was going through the devastating experience of cancer). This links the article and makes it clearer to the readers, especially those who may not be so familiar with her story. I am really happy with my final product.
